Traveling Writer And The Internet

Downtown Winslow, Bainbridge Island

Before the World Wide Web was born on August 6, 1991, I decided I wanted to be a syndicated traveling writer.  I would drive around the United States and find interesting people and places to write about and send my copy to my editor.  I never could work out the logistics of the process to my editors satisfaction so I never followed through.

Then the Internet was born and I discovered the idea of Blogging.  When the concept started, I found that I needed to learn a certain amount of coding.  Not an easy task for someone who’s greatest challenge to that point was putting a sheet of paper in my IBM Selectric without getting a paper cut.

I did discover email, which made my idea of being a traveling writer a bit more plausible.  I did a few travel pieces, from time to time, because it was easier to get them to the editor.  I would write the story, stick it in an email and press send.  The editor was more open to this idea since the logistics were more straight forward.  He just had to print the piece and hand it to the production team.

Later, as Blogging software became more sophisticated (WordPress in particular) I became a Blogger, mainly because I could write my articles more easily.  Writing a Blog is similar to how I wrote with a Selectric but with a few more easy steps.

Now, in semi-retirement (whatever that really means), I sit at my computer and write about Bainbridge Island.  I am not a traveling writer, but I’m having a lot more fun.
