I keep seeing articles and TV shows about the end of the world. According to the latest predictions, the world is scheduled to end on Friday, December 21, 2012. My wife says it had better not end on Friday because she has a her birthday party planned for Sunday afternoon.
So far we’ve had two predictions of the end of the world that didn’t come true. Who knows why. Maybe the powers that be changed their minds, or maybe they lost their appointment calendars or simply forgot to show up.
Maybe the powers that be intended to blow our little planet up, but the guy with the detonators fell sick, or maybe a stiff breeze simply blew out the fuse.
Making predictions is a tricky business, especially when the person making them says its an absolute, bet the bank certainty. It is especially hurtful if the person making the prediction is very charismatic and has a lot of followers who will believe almost blindly. Then, when the prediction doesn’t come true, their trust is broken. Then what.
As for myself, I don’t know if the latest incarnation of Henny Penny is right or not. I won’t know until Saturday, December 22, 2012. What I do know is that I will continue to live my life as fully and completely as possible up to the last moment, whenever that may be.
What I also know for certain is that, if the world does come to an end on December 21, God is going to get an ear full from my wife if she doesn’t get her birthday party.
